Bone Fractures

The severity of the fracture often depends on the force that caused the fracture. If the bone’s breaking point has been exceeded only slightly, the bone may crack rather than break all the way. Extreme force may cause a bone to break in such a way that bone fragments stick out through the skin. This is called an open fracture. This type of fracture is particularly serious because once the skin is broken, infection in both the wound and skin can occur. X-rays can help the physician determine whether there is a fracture and what type of fracture it is.

The treatment of the fracture depends on the severity of the break and whether it is open or closed. Fractures can be treated with cast immobilization, bracing or open reductions (when the orthopedic surgeon performs surgery on the bone).

Bones get stronger with regular but not excessive exercise. It is important for people to remain physically active.
